In a move to bolster defense and security ties, Austria is contemplating participation in Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative. This development follows a recent meeting in Luxembourg where Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner engaged in discussions with her Luxembourg counterpart, Yuriko Backes. The dialogue focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in the realms of defense, space technology, and cybersecurity.
Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 project was a key topic during the visit, which also included talks with satellite operator SES. Minister Tanner underscored the growing significance of secure satellite communications against the backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions. She highlighted that enhanced collaboration in this area would not only fortify state communications resilience but also contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy.
GovSat 2 aims to deliver secure communication services tailored for Luxembourg’s defense needs and extend its capabilities to the European Union, NATO, and allied nations. The satellite’s launch is currently projected for 2029, aligning with broader European security objectives.
The visit culminated in the signing of a letter of intent between Austria and Luxembourg, signaling a commitment to deepen cooperation across multiple defense-related domains. These include advancements in cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. While Austria has yet to specify its financial commitment to the GovSat 2 project, the discussions mark a significant step towards increased collaboration between the two countries.
