Iran has expressed frustration with Qatar, alleging that the Gulf nation is hindering investigations into the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots reported missing amidst recent hostilities. Tehran claims these pilots vanished during a conflict involving the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Meanwhile, Qatar has firmly dismissed these accusations, denying any knowledge or detention of the pilots.
A senior official from Iran’s armed forces, Mohammad Bagherzadeh, disclosed that a specialized Iranian Air Force team has been awaiting authorization for months to travel to Qatar to probe the matter. Bagherzadeh has called on Doha to permit the team’s visit and has urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene. Iran has confirmed the recovery of one pilot’s body, Majid Kazemi, who was reportedly killed during an attack linked to the US base.
In response, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, refuted the allegations, stating that Qatar took defensive actions only after the Iranian pilots allegedly breached Qatari airspace and failed to respond to communication attempts. Al-Ansari emphasized that Qatar had no involvement in detaining the pilots. Doha asserted its commitment to locating the missing pilots and coordinating with Iran for the transfer of the remains of one pilot.
Qatar maintains that it extended an invitation to Iranian authorities in April to dispatch a team to receive comprehensive information regarding the search and rescue efforts, an offer that remains unanswered. This dispute unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, the US, and other nations, stemming from an earlier conflict this year. Qatar has played a notable diplomatic role, striving to ease tensions and facilitate dialogue among the involved parties.
