Luxembourg City is seeking to enhance its security measures by expanding CCTV surveillance in the city centre, following a formal request by Mayor Lydie Polfer to Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden. The municipal council has given the proposal preliminary approval, though specifics regarding the number and exact locations of the cameras are still under consideration.
The decision to augment surveillance in the capital comes as police plan to evaluate security needs and pinpoint priority areas for camera installation. While Mayor Polfer acknowledges that CCTV cannot prevent all crimes, she emphasizes its potential to aid investigators in identifying suspects and piecing together the sequence of incidents.
Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer noted that the city’s surveillance efforts have already been expanded in the Gare district and Bonnevoie, responding to increasing security concerns and reported offenses. Bauer highlighted that the initiative aims to equip police with the necessary tools to perform their duties effectively.
The push for more surveillance also echoes the demands of local business owners and residents who are advocating for stronger security measures. They believe that CCTV footage could be instrumental in police investigations and that the presence of visible cameras might deter criminal activities such as pickpocketing.
