An anti-tariff ad from the province of Ontario has led to a diplomatic freeze, with president Donald Trump “terminating” all trade talks with Canada.
The ad featured a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan warning against tariffs. Trump blasted the ad as “fake” and “fraudulent.”
He accused Canada of “egregious behavior” and attempting to meddle in US legal affairs. The ad was a protest against 35% US tariffs on Canadian goods.
The ad has also drawn criticism from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, which stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the full speech.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, puts the c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship at risk and escalates the ongoing trade war.
