Vietnam and Switzerland are set to enhance their longstanding diplomatic ties by expanding cooperation in several key areas, including trade, investment, science, and technology. This commitment was reaffirmed during an event in Bern marking Vietnam’s National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President Nguyễn Thị Thanh emphasized the importance Vietnam places on its relationship with Switzerland, highlighting the support received during pivotal historical moments. Thanh expressed a desire to deepen cooperation by leveraging political trust and traditional friendship while seeking to broaden economic partnerships and collaborations in innovation and technology.
Economic cooperation has been a cornerstone of the Vietnam-Switzerland relationship, with trade between the two countries surpassing $2 billion annually. Over 100 Swiss companies have established and expanded their operations in Vietnam, investing in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, precision machinery, and watchmaking. Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Châu Mai Anh noted the significance of upcoming milestones, including the establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership in 2025 and the finalization of a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association.
Swiss Senator Mauro Poggia acknowledged the significant expansion of bilateral cooperation since Vietnam embarked on its economic renewal process, praising Switzerland’s role in Vietnam’s economic transformation and sustainable development. Both countries recognize further potential in sectors such as digital transformation, sustainable development, finance, and human resource development.
The event underscored the mutual benefits and opportunities that a strengthened partnership between Vietnam and Switzerland could bring, with both sides eager to capitalize on each other’s strengths to foster growth and innovation.
