China and Switzerland have successfully wrapped up discussions aimed at enhancing their free trade agreement, signaling a move towards more robust economic collaboration amid the backdrop of escalating global trade tensions. The announcement was made jointly by Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Swiss President Guy Parmelin in Bern, where they also signed a memorandum of understanding to mark the conclusion of these negotiations.
Initiated in September 2024, the talks spanned over five rounds before reaching a consensus on the upgraded agreement. This revised agreement is designed to facilitate broader market access in both directions, encompassing areas such as trade in goods and services, investment, and trade regulations. Both nations have expressed that the agreement will establish a more stable and predictable business environment, bolstering long-term economic partnership.
The original free trade agreement between China and Switzerland was signed in 2013 and came into force in 2014. This new development marks a significant evolution of their economic ties, as both countries aim to adjust to the changing landscape of international trade.
Before the upgraded agreement can be formally signed and put into practice, China and Switzerland will proceed with completing their respective domestic procedures.
