In a significant summit held in Tivat, Montenegro, leaders from the European Union and the Western Balkans convened to bolster regional cooperation and discuss the prospects of EU membership for countries in the Western Balkans. This meeting, which took place six months after a similar gathering in Brussels, revolved around the theme “Shared Prosperity and Stability of the EU and the Western Balkans.” The discussions were primarily focused on EU enlargement, economic integration, and enhancing regional resilience amid rising geopolitical challenges.
The EU leaders reiterated their commitment to supporting the Western Balkans’ aspirations for EU membership and assessed the progress made in integrating these countries into the EU’s economic framework. A pivotal point of the discussions was the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, initiated in 2023, which earmarks up to €6 billion in funding to aid reforms, encourage investments, and foster closer participation in the EU single market.
Security cooperation was another critical area of focus, with leaders emphasizing the need to strengthen ties in foreign policy, defense, and cybersecurity. The summit underscored the importance of enhancing resilience against cyber threats, disinformation campaigns, and other forms of external interference, recognizing the growing complexity of global security dynamics.
