Italy’s Meloni Reaffirms Support for Ukraine Amid Coalition Divisions

by admin477351

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has pledged to maintain Italy’s support for Ukraine, despite facing potential political repercussions. In a forthcoming book interview, Meloni acknowledged that some Italian citizens might oppose the continued military and economic assistance to Kyiv, but she emphasized that the policy serves Italy’s national interests.

Meloni argued that supporting Ukraine is crucial for defending an international order based on law, warning that allowing powerful nations to exert their will through military force could ultimately harm Italy. Her stance comes amid ongoing disagreements within Italy’s governing coalition regarding the country’s aid to Ukraine.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the League party, has openly criticized the policy and expressed a desire to end Italy’s economic and military support. In contrast, Foreign Minister and fellow Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has reiterated Italy’s commitment to Ukraine, noting that another assistance package is currently in preparation.

The differing opinions within the coalition highlight internal divisions, but Meloni has firmly stated that under her leadership, Italy’s support for Ukraine will persist. Her comments underscore a broader debate within Italy about the nation’s role in international conflicts and its commitment to upholding international law.
