In 2025, Luxembourg found itself among the European Union’s least-performing nations in renewable electricity consumption, according to recent data from Eurostat. Despite a general increase in the use of renewable energy throughout the EU, Luxembourg’s renewable sources contributed only 20.2% to its gross final energy consumption. This placed the country near the bottom of the EU rankings for renewable energy reliance.
Specifically, Luxembourg’s gross electricity consumption from renewables was recorded at just 23.3%, surpassing only Czechia and Malta within the bloc. These numbers highlight the country’s struggle to keep pace with the wider EU movement towards renewable energy, which saw an average of 26.2% of gross final energy consumption being sourced from renewables across the Union in 2025. This marks significant progress from a starting point of 9.6% in 2004, as the EU continues to work towards its 2030 target of achieving 42.5%.
Meanwhile, Sweden emerged as the leader in the EU’s renewable energy landscape, with an impressive 65.4% of its overall energy consumption coming from renewable sources. Finland and Denmark followed closely, demonstrating strong commitments to sustainable energy practices. Austria distinguished itself in the realm of renewable electricity consumption, generating over 90% of its electricity from renewable sources, setting a benchmark for the rest of the EU.
These statistics underscore the varied progress among EU nations in their transition to renewable energy. The continued expansion of renewable energy use across the bloc reflects an ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable energy solutions. However, countries like Luxembourg still face significant challenges in aligning with EU-wide goals and advancing their renewable energy infrastructure to meet future targets.
